16. The throne of David established forever

Old Testament Prophecy

2 Sam 7:12-13 When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.

2 Sam 7:16 Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.’”

2 Sam 7:25-26 so you may gain lasting fame, as people say, ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is God over Israel!’ The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you,

New Testament Fulfilled

1 Chr 17:11-14 When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He will build me a house, and I will make his dynasty permanent. 13 I will become his father and he will become my son. I will never withhold my loyal love from him, as I withheld it from the one who ruled before you. 14 I will put him in permanent charge of my house and my kingdom; his dynasty will be permanent.”’”

1 Chr 17:23-27 So now, O Lord, may the promise you made about your servant and his family become a permanent reality! Do as you promised, 24 so it may become a reality and you may gain lasting fame, as people say, ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is the God of Israel.’ The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you, 25 for you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a dynasty for him. That is why your servant has had the courage to pray to you. 26 Now, O Lord, you are the true God; you have made this good promise to your servant. 27 Now you are willing to bless your servant’s dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O Lord, have blessed it and it will be blessed from now on into the future.”

2 Chr 21:7 But the Lord was unwilling to destroy David’s dynasty because of the promise he had made to give David a perpetual dynasty.

Matt 19:28 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth: In the age when all things are renewed, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Matt 21:4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:

Matt 25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.

Mark 12:37 If David himself calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.

Luke 1:32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

John 7:4  For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”

Acts 2:30 So then, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne,

Acts 13:23 From the descendants of this man God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, just as he promised.

Rom 1:3 concerning his Son who was a descendant of David with reference to the flesh,

2 Tim 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David; such is my gospel,

Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my son! Today I have fathered you”? And in another place he says, “I will be his father and he will be my son.”

Heb 1:8 but of the Son he says,

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

and a righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.

8:1 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We have such a high priest, one who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,

Heb 12:2 keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Rev 22:1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life—water as clear as crystal—pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

17. A promised Redeemer

Old Testament Prophecy

Job 19:25-27 As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and that as the last

he will stand upon the earth. 26  And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God, 27 whom I will see for myself, and whom my own eyes will behold, and not another. My heart grows faint within me.

New Testament Fulfilled

John 5:28-29 “Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out—the ones who have done what is good to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done what is evil to the resurrection resulting in condemnation.

Gal 4:4 But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

Eph 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our offenses, according to the riches of his grace

Eph 1:11 In Christ we too have been claimed as God’s own possession, since we were predestined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will

Eph 1:14 who is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.

18. Declared to be the Son of God

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 2:1-12 Why do the nations rebel?

Why are the countries devising plots that will fail?

The kings of the earth form a united front;

the rulers collaborate

against the Lord and his anointed king.

They say, “Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us.

Let’s free ourselves from their ropes.”

The one enthroned in heaven laughs in disgust; the Lord taunts them.

Then he angrily speaks to them and terrifies them in his rage, saying,

“I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy hill.”

The king says, “I will announce the Lord’s decree. He said to me: ‘You are my son. This very day I have become your father.

Ask me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your personal property.

You will break them with an iron scepter; you will smash them like a potter’s jar.’”

10  So now, you kings, do what is wise; you rulers of the earth, submit to correction.

11  Serve the Lord in fear. Repent in terror.

12  Give sincere homage. Otherwise he will be angry, and you will die because of your behavior, when his anger quickly ignites. How blessed are all who take shelter in him!

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my one dear Son; in him I take great delight.”

Mark 1:11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.”

Acts 4:25-26 who said by the Holy Spirit through your servant David our forefather,

Why do the nations rage,

and the peoples plot foolish things?

26 The kings of the earth stood together,

and the rulers assembled together,

against the Lord and against his Christ.’

Acts 13:33 Then Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia, but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.

Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my son! Today I have fathered you”? And in another place he says, “I will be his father and he will be my son.”

Heb 5:5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming high priest, but the one who glorified him was God, who said to him, “You are my Son! Today I have fathered you,”

Rev 2:26-27 And to the one who conquers and who continues in my deeds until the end, I will give him authority over the nations—

27 he will rule them with an iron rod

and like clay jars he will break them to pieces,

Rev 19:15-16  From his mouth extends a sharp sword, so that with it he can strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he stomps the winepress of the furious wrath of God, the All-Powerful. 16 He has a name written on his clothing and on his thigh: “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

19. His resurrection

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 16:8-10 I constantly trust in the Lord;

because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

So my heart rejoices and I am happy; my life is safe.

10 You will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful follower to see the Pit.

New Testament Fulfilled

Acts 2:27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,

nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.

Acts 13:35 Therefore he also says in another psalm, ‘You will not permit your Holy One to experience decay.’

Acts 26:23  that the Christ was to suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, to proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.”

20. Hands and feet pierced

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 22:1-31 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

I groan in prayer, but help seems far away.

2 My God, I cry out during the day,

but you do not answer,

and during the night my prayers do not let up.

3 You are holy;

you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel.

4 In you our ancestors trusted;

they trusted in you and you rescued them.

5 To you they cried out, and they were saved;

in you they trusted and they were not disappointed.

6 But I am a worm, not a man;

people insult me and despise me.

7 All who see me taunt me;

they mock me and shake their heads.

8 They say,

“Commit yourself to the Lord!

Let the Lord rescue him!

Let the Lord deliver him, for he delights in him.”

9 Yes, you are the one who brought me out from the womb

and made me feel secure on my mother’s breasts.

10 I have been dependent on you since birth;

from the time I came out of my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11 Do not remain far away from me,

for trouble is near and I have no one to help me.

12 Many bulls surround me;

powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in.

13 They open their mouths to devour me

like a roaring lion that rips its prey.

14 My strength drains away like water;

all my bones are dislocated.

My heart is like wax;

it melts away inside me.

15 The roof of my mouth is as dry as a piece of pottery;

my tongue sticks to my gums.

You set me in the dust of death.

16 Yes, wild dogs surround me—

a gang of evil men crowd around me;

like a lion they pin my hands and feet.

17 I can count all my bones;

my enemies are gloating over me in triumph.

18 They are dividing up my clothes among themselves;

they are rolling dice for my garments.

19 But you, O Lord, do not remain far away.

You are my source of strength. Hurry and help me!

20 Deliver me from the sword.

Save my life from the claws of the wild dogs.

21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lion,

and from the horns of the wild oxen.

You have answered me.

22 I will declare your name to my countrymen.

In the middle of the assembly I will praise you.

23 You loyal followers of the Lord, praise him.

All you descendants of Jacob, honor him.

All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him.

24 For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed.

He did not ignore him;

when he cried out to him, he responded.

25 You are the reason I offer praise in the great assembly;

I will fulfill my promises before the Lord’s loyal followers.

26 Let the oppressed eat and be filled.

Let those who seek his help praise the Lord.

May you live forever!

27 Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the Lord and turn to him.

Let all the nations worship you.

28 For the Lord is king

and rules over the nations.

29 All the thriving people of the earth will join the celebration and worship;

all those who are descending into the grave will bow before him,

including those who cannot preserve their lives.

30 A whole generation will serve him;

they will tell the next generation about the Lord.

31 They will come and tell about his saving deeds;

they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 27:31 When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Matt 35-36 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by throwing dice. 36 Then they sat down and kept guard over him there.

21. Mocked and insulted

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 22:7-8 All who see me taunt me;

they mock me and shake their heads.

8 They say,

“Commit yourself to the Lord!

Let the Lord rescue him!

Let the Lord deliver him, for he delights in him.”

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 27:39-43 Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!” 41 In the same way even the chief priests—together with the experts in the law and elders—were mocking him: 42 “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him! 43 He trusts in God—let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said, ‘I am God’s Son’!”

Matt 27:45-59 Jesus’ Death 45 Now from noon until three, darkness came over all the land. 46 At about three o’clock Jesus shouted with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the rest said, “Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.” 50 Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. 51 Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were split apart. 52 And tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had died were raised. 53 (They came out of the tombs after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.) 54 Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said, “Truly this one was God’s Son!” 55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and given him support were also there, watching from a distance. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus’ Burial

57 Now when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

22. Soldiers cast lots for coat

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 22:18 They are dividing up my clothes among themselves;

they are rolling dice for my garments.

New Testament Fulfilled

Mark 15:20 When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Mark 15:24-25 Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take. 25 It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.

Mark 15:34 Around three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Luke 19:24 And he said to his attendants, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.’

Luke 23:35 The people also stood there watching, but the leaders ridiculed him, saying, “He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one!”

John 19:15-18 Then they shouted out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests replied, “We have no king except Caesar!” 16 Then Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, 17 and carrying his own cross he went out to the place called “The Place of the Skull” (called in Aramaic Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him along with two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.

John 19:23-24 Now when the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and made four shares, one for each soldier, and the tunic remained. (Now the tunic was seamless, woven from top to bottom as a single piece.) 24 So the soldiers said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but throw dice to see who will get it.” This took place to fulfill the scripture that says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they threw dice.” So the soldiers did these things.

John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water flowed out immediately.

Acts 2:23-24 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles. 24 But God raised him up, having released him from the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.

23. Accused by false witnesses

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 27:12 Do not turn me over to my enemies,

for false witnesses who want to destroy me testify against me.

Matt 26:60-61  But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

24. He commits His spirit

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 31:5 Into your hand I entrust my life;

you will rescue me, O Lord, the faithful God.

New Testament Fulfilled

Luke 23:46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And after he said this he breathed his last.

25. No broken bone

Old Testament Prophecy

not one of them is broken.

New Testament Fulfilled

John 19:36 For these things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled, “Not a bone of his will be broken.”

26. Accused by false witnesses

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 35:11 Violent men perjure themselves,

and falsely accuse me.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 26:59-61 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

Mark 14:57-58 Some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands and in three days build another not made with hands.’”

27. Hated without reason

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 35:19 Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason gloat over me.

Do not let those who hate me without cause carry out their wicked schemes.

New Testament Fulfilled

John 15:24-25 If I had not performed among them the miraculous deeds that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen the deeds and have hated both me and my Father. 25 Now this happened to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without reason.’

28. Friends stand afar off

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 38:11 Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 27:55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and given him support were also there, watching from a distance.

Mark 15:40 There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

Luke 23:49 And all those who knew Jesus stood at a distance, and the women who had followed him from Galilee saw these things.

29. “I come to do Thy will”

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 40:6-8 Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern.

You make that quite clear to me.

You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings.

7 Then I say,

“Look, I come!

What is written in the scroll pertains to me.

8 I want to do what pleases you, my God.

Your law dominates my thoughts.”

New Testament Fulfilled

Heb 10:5-9 So when he came into the world, he said,

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me.

6 “Whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you took no delight in.

7 “Then I said, ‘Here I am: I have come—it is written of me in the scroll of the book—to do your will, O God.’”

8 When he says above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you did not desire nor did you take delight in them” (which are offered according to the law), 9 then he says, “Here I am: I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first to establish the second.

30. Betrayed by a friend

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted,

he who shared meals with me, has turned against me.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 26:14-16 Then one of the twelve, the one named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me to betray him into your hands?” So they set out thirty silver coins for him. 16 From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray him.

Matt 26:47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.

Matt 26:50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you are here to do.” Then they came and took hold of Jesus and arrested him.

Mark 14:17-21  Then, when it was evening, he came to the house with the twelve. 18 While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me will betray me.” 19 They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips his hand with me into the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

Luke 22:19-23  Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

A Final Discourse

21 “But look, the hand of the one who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man is to go just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.

John 13:18-19 “What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, ‘The one who eats my bread has turned against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he.
