46. The King comes in the name of the Lord

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 118:26 May the one who comes in the name of the Lord be blessed.

We will pronounce blessings on you in the Lord’s temple.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 21:9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those following kept shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Matt 23:39 For I tell you, you will not see me from now until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Mark 11:9 Both those who went ahead and those who followed kept shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Luke 13:35 Look, your house is forsaken! And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Luke 19:38Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

John 12:13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!”

47. David’s seed to reign

Old Testament Prophecy

Ps 132:11 The Lord made a reliable promise to David;

he will not go back on his word.

He said, “I will place one of your descendants on your throne.

2 Sam 7:12-13 When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.

2 Sam 7:16 Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.’”

2 Sam 7:25-26 So now, O Lord God, make this promise you have made about your servant and his family a permanent reality. Do as you promised, 26 so you may gain lasting fame, as people say, ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is God over Israel!’ The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you,

2 Sam 7:29 Now be willing to bless your servant’s dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O Sovereign Lord, have spoken. By your blessing may your servant’s dynasty be blessed from now on into the future!”

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 1:1 This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

48. Declared to be the Son of God

Old Testament Prophecy

Prov 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven, and then descended?

Who has gathered up the winds in his fists?

Who has bound up the waters in his cloak?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you can know!

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my one dear Son; in him I take great delight.”

Mark 14:61-62 But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Luke 1:35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.

John 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven—the Son of Man.

John 9:35-38 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, so he found the man and said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 The man replied, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus told him, “You have seen him; he is the one speaking with you.” 38 [He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

John 11:21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

Rom 1:2-4 This gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, 3 concerning his Son who was a descendant of David with reference to the flesh, 4 who was appointed the Son-of-God-in-power according to the Holy Spirit by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 10:6-9  But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we preach), 9 because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

2 Pet 1:17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: “This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted.”

49. Repentance for the nations

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 2:2-4 In future days

the mountain of the Lord’s temple will endure

as the most important of mountains,

and will be the most prominent of hills.

All the nations will stream to it;

many peoples will come and say,

“Come, let us go up to the Lord’s mountain,

to the temple of the God of Jacob,

so he can teach us his requirements,

and we can follow his standards.”

For Zion will be the center for moral instruction;

the Lord’s message will issue from Jerusalem.

He will judge disputes between nations;

he will settle cases for many peoples.

They will beat their swords into plowshares,

and their spears into pruning hooks.

Nations will not take up the sword against other nations,

and they will no longer train for war.

New Testament Fulfilled

Luke 24:47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

50. Hearts are hardened

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 6:9-10 He said, “Go and tell these people:

“‘Listen continually, but don’t understand.

Look continually, but don’t perceive.’

10 Make the hearts of these people calloused;

make their ears deaf and their eyes blind.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears,

their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed.”

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 13:14-15 And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

You will listen carefully yet will never understand,

you will look closely yet will never comprehend.

15 For the heart of this people has become dull;

they are hard of hearing,

and they have shut their eyes,

so that they would not see with their eyes

and hear with their ears

and understand with their hearts

and turn, and I would heal them.’

John 12:39-40 For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said,

40 He has blinded their eyes

and hardened their heart,

so that they would not see with their eyes

and understand with their heart,

and turn to me, and I would heal them.”

Acts 28:25-27 So they began to leave, unable to agree among themselves, after Paul made one last statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah 26 when he said,

Go to this people and say,

You will keep on hearing, but will never understand,

and you will keep on looking, but will never perceive.

27 For the heart of this people has become dull,

and their ears are hard of hearing,

and they have closed their eyes,

so that they would not see with their eyes

and hear with their ears

and understand with their heart

and turn, and I would heal them.”’

51. Born of a virgin

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 7:14 For this reason the Lord himself will give you a confirming sign. Look, this young woman is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 1:22-23 This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: 23 Look! The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will name him Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.”

52. A rock of offense

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 8:14-15 He will become a sanctuary,

but a stone that makes a person trip,

and a rock that makes one stumble—

to the two houses of Israel.

He will become a trap and a snare

to the residents of Jerusalem.

15 Many will stumble over the stone and the rock,

and will fall and be seriously injured,

and will be ensnared and captured.”

New Testament Fulfilled

Rom 9:33 just as it is written,

“Look, I am laying in Zion a stone that will cause people to stumble

and a rock that will make them fall,

yet the one who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

1 Pet 2:8 and a stumbling-stone and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

53. Light out of darkness

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 9:1-2 (8:23) The gloom will be dispelled for those who were anxious.

In earlier times he humiliated

the land of Zebulun,

and the land of Naphtali;

but now he brings honor

to the way of the sea,

the region beyond the Jordan,

and Galilee of the nations.

2 (9:1) The people walking in darkness

see a bright light;

light shines

on those who live in a land of deep darkness.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 4:14-16 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled:

15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,

the way by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

16 the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,

and on those who sit in the region and shadow of death a light has dawned.”

Luke 2:32 a light,

for revelation to the Gentiles,

and for glory to your people Israel.”

54. God with us

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 9:6-7 For a child has been born to us,

a son has been given to us.

He shoulders responsibility

and is called

Wonderful Adviser,

Mighty God,

Everlasting Father,

Prince of Peace.

7 His dominion will be vast,

and he will bring immeasurable prosperity.

He will rule on David’s throne

and over David’s kingdom,

establishing it and strengthening it

by promoting justice and fairness,

from this time forward and forevermore.

The zeal of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will accomplish this.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 1:21 She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Matt 1:23 Look! The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will name him Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.”

Luke 1:32-33 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!”

John 10:30 The Father and I are one.”

John 14:19 In a little while the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too.

2 Cor 5:19 In other words, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them, and he has given us the message of reconciliation.

Col 2:9 For in him all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form,

55. Full of wisdom and power

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 11:1-10 A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s root stock,

a bud will sprout from his roots.

2 The Lord’s Spirit will rest on him—

a Spirit that gives extraordinary wisdom,

a Spirit that provides the ability to execute plans,

a Spirit that produces absolute loyalty to the Lord.

3 He will take delight in obeying the Lord.

He will not judge by mere appearances,

or make decisions on the basis of hearsay.

4 He will treat the poor fairly,

and make right decisions for the downtrodden of the earth.

He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,

and order the wicked to be executed.

5 Justice will be like a belt around his waist,

integrity will be like a belt around his hips.

6 A wolf will reside with a lamb,

and a leopard will lie down with a young goat;

an ox and a young lion will graze together,

as a small child leads them along.

7 A cow and a bear will graze together,

their young will lie down together.

A lion, like an ox, will eat straw.

8 A baby will play

over the hole of a snake;

over the nest of a serpent

an infant will put his hand.

9 They will no longer injure or destroy

on my entire royal mountain.

For there will be universal submission to the Lord’s sovereignty,

just as the waters completely cover the sea.

Israel is Reclaimed and Reunited

10 At that time a root from Jesse will stand like a signal flag for the nations. Nations will look to him for guidance, and his residence will be majestic.

New Testament Fulfilled

Matt 3:16 After Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him.

John 3:34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit sparingly.

Rom 15:12 And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, and the one who rises to rule over the Gentiles, in him will the Gentiles hope.”

Heb 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness.

So God, your God, has anointed you over your companions with the oil of rejoicing.”

56. Reigning in mercy

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 16:4-5 Please let the Moabite fugitives live among you.

Hide them from the destroyer!”

Certainly the one who applies pressure will cease;

the destroyer will come to an end;

those who trample will disappear from the earth.

5 Then a trustworthy king will be established;

he will rule in a reliable manner,

this one from David’s family.

He will be sure to make just decisions

and will be experienced in executing justice.

New Testament Fulfilled

Luke 1:31-33 Listen: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

57. Key to the Door

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 22:21-25  I will put your robe on him, tie your belt around him, and transfer your authority to him. He will become a protector of the residents of Jerusalem and of the people of Judah. 22 I will place the key to the house of David on his shoulder. When he opens the door, no one can close it; when he closes the door, no one can open it. 23 I will fasten him like a peg into a solid place; he will bring honor and respect to his father’s family. 24 His father’s family will gain increasing prominence because of him, including the offspring and the offshoots. All the small containers, including the bowls and all the jars, will hang from this peg.’

25 “At that time,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “the peg fastened into a solid place will come loose. It will be cut off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off.” Indeed, the Lord has spoken.

New Testament Fulfilled

Rev 3:7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write the following:

“This is the solemn pronouncement of the Holy One, the True One, who holds the key of David, who opens doors no one can shut, and shuts doors no one can open:

58. Death swallowed up in victory

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 25:6-12 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies will hold a banquet for all the nations on this mountain.

At this banquet there will be plenty of meat and aged wine

tender meat and choicest wine.

7 On this mountain he will swallow up

the shroud that is over all the peoples,

the woven covering that is over all the nations;

8 he will swallow up death permanently.

The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from every face,

and remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth.

Indeed, the Lord has announced it!

9 At that time they will say,

“Look, here is our God!

We waited for him, and he delivered us.

Here is the Lord! We waited for him.

Let’s rejoice and celebrate his deliverance!”

10 For the Lord’s power will make this mountain secure.

Moab will be trampled down where it stands,

as a heap of straw is trampled down in a manure pile.

11 Moab will spread out its hands in the middle of it,

just as a swimmer spreads his hands to swim;

the Lord will bring down Moab’s pride as it spreads its hands.

12 The fortified city (along with the very tops of your walls) he will knock down,

he will bring it down, he will throw it down to the dusty ground.

1 Cor 15:54 Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen,

Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

an approved stone,

set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation.

The one who maintains his faith will not panic.

New Testament Fulfilled

Rom 9:33  just as it is written,

Look, I am laying in Zion a stone that will cause people to stumble

and a rock that will make them fall,

yet the one who believes in him will not be put to shame.

1 Pet 2:6 For it says in scripture, “Look, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and whoever believes in him will never be put to shame.”

60. The deaf hear, the blind see

Old Testament Prophecy

Isa 29:18-19 At that time the deaf will be able to hear words read from a scroll,
